Remembering Frank Lloyd Wright: Homes for Sale Designed by the Famed Architect

In honor of Frank Lloyd Wright Remembrance Day, the 54th anniversary of the passing of Frank Lloyd Wright, Redfin gathered a list of homes currently for sale that were influenced by the famed architect. Wright designed nearly 300 homes in his lifetime, a handful of which are available to purchase. The homes represent Wright’s range of architecture, from prairie style homes in Chicago to Usonian-style homes in California and Washington. Photos of each home can be viewed in the Redfin Collection titled “Frank Lloyd Wright Homes.”

Wright also taught and mentored students at the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural school in Arizona, who went on to design homes inspired by “the greatest American architect of all time.” The homes designed by Wright himself range in price from $849,000 to $3.35 million. Homes designed by his students and followers range from $385,000 to $9.9 million.

This meticulously restored Prairie-style home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892. Known as a “bootleg” house, Wright designed it secretly while still working for his first architectural firm. It’s now a historical landmark and a contributing property to the U.S. federally Registered Historic District in Oak Park due to its significance in Wright’s budding career.

This home was built in 1906 for George Millard, a rare book dealer. The board and batten exterior is in line with Wright’s prairie style, which is distinguished by a low-pitched hipped roof, long bands of windows, wide overhanging eaves and wood bands. The home’s previous owners received a preservation award for their devotion to the home, which includes 68 art glass windows.

The ‘Robert G. Emmond’ house is yet another “bootleg” home secretly designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892 while he was working for the Adler and Sullivan architecture firm. This Victorian style is less typical of Wright’s other work and features an octagonal turret and an equilateral roof. The home also boasts five bedrooms, two fire places, a historically accurate kitchen, leaded glass windows, and several porches.

These are two neighboring homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892. The homes, known as the Warren McArthur and George Blossom homes, The exteriors of each home are very different, but the interiors are similar, with rounded doorways, art glass windows and built-in furniture.

This home was not only designed by Wright, it also comes fully furnished with pieces created by the architect. It was built in 1952 in the Usonian-style, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Structures. The home sits on 3.2 wooded acres and features large floor-to-ceiling windows to bring the outside in, the essence of Wright’s style.

This Usonian-style home will remind any Wright fan of Taliesin West, Wright’s personal residence in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was designed for Robert Berger, a mechanical engineer, and his wife, Gloria. Robert and his family built the entire home using stone, glass, wood and concrete, which blend in with the colors and shapes of the surrounding landscape.

This 115 year old Hyde Park, yellow Roman brick beauty was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1887. With sixteen rooms, seven bedrooms, and 6,100 square-feet, it’s a grand homage to classical architecture, and marked a transformation of Wright’s own personal style. Dramatic details include the use of geometric stained glass windows throughout all three floors, high vaulted ceilings, and to keep things modern, a working elevator.

This property lays claim to two famous architects. The home was designed by Wright in 1949, and the landscape design was done by Henry Matsutani, who did the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park. Several small bridges cross over a stream that winds through the property, which also includes a tea room and Koi pond.
