Dine and Dash: South Street Diner
Last week’s trip to Mike’s City Diner was so good, we decided to hit another diner. We’re walking up to the Leather District for lunch at South Street Diner this Sunday. Back in the day, South Street Diner wasn’t as much a dining destination as it was a place we ended up eating eggs after a long night. I don’t imagine much changed, but it will be odd dining during daylight.
South Street sits at the southern border of Boston’s Leather District. I don’t know if the Leather District is an official Boston neighborhood or if it’s just the eastern end of Chinatown; the transition from one neighborhood to the next is difficult to discern. A couple blocks of old leather and textile factories make up the area. Over time, developers converted the abandoned factories into warehouses, apartments, and most recently, condos offering an industrial-look with open spaces, high ceilings, and exposed utilities. They also cost about half as much per square foot as homes in the South End.
