Coffee shop of choice: 1369 – one block away – is the uncontested finest coffee shop in Cambridge. Situated in the former 1369 (jazz) Club, this is the perfect hideout for Boston transplants who refuse to drink Dunkin’ Donuts swill. The baristas actually photograph and display their finest examples of cappuccino foam art. They also sell the best scones we have ever had (from local bakery Petsi’s pies). And if you want to mix up your morning routine, you’re only four blocks from its Central Square location.
Favorite places to go: Strolling to Harvard Square, jogging to the Charles River, walking to catch a film at the Kendall Square Theater. With virtually everything you need within walking distance, the car spends a lot of time in the garage.
Favorite restaurant in the area: Oleana, which features incredible Turkish-inspired cuisine and a chef who received the James Beard award for Best Northeast Chef in ’05. If that doesn’t suit you, Inman Square also boasts the best Mexican, Portuguese, Brazilian, pub grub, sandwiches and ice cream in all of Boston (according to Boston Magazine’s ’07 Best of Boston issue).
Best features of the home: The south facing windows that catch the sunlight throughout the day. More than once they have tricked us into leaving the house without our hats and gloves!
Favorite room: The “main room,” which encompasses the dining room, living room, and kitchen in an open arrangement. The condo is the complete opposite of your typical boxy Bostonian unit, and allows you to really pack in people when entertaining. Throw in some kitchen bar stools, and you can cook while chatting with guests.
Any remodeling since last purchase?: Although the condo was completely remodeled when we moved in (and still looks it!), we have improved a number of external structures. We just installed a brand-new mahogany deck. In addition, we redid the driveway, shored up and re-roofed the garage, and installed an energy-efficient furnace and humidifier system.
Most romantic spot: Watching the Fourth of July fireworks from the back deck. It’s a partial view, but spectacular nonetheless.
What’s in the neighborhood: Everything, and more. For example, you have three kinds of grocery stores: Whole Foods, the Harvest co-op, and a Foodmaster. A hardware store whose proprietor actually knows where everything is and what it is used for. And the well-loved Paine Park, which spawned an active neighborhood association that plans annual yard sales and block parties.
What I will miss the most: Being right in the heart of Cambridge, in the last major Square not overrun by chain stores. Being on an extremely quiet street with very little traffic, but just steps away from all the activity. And if you do want to explore the area further, the Central Square T is just an eight-minute walk away.
