Train, Bike, Breakfast, Beach, Open House
I won’t lie to you; according to NOAA, Saturday could be our last day of August for a while. For the ones on Sunday, use a car.
I just tried the MBTA’s Bike to the Beach plan, as part of my get-home-from-the- mechanic-while-my-girlfriend-is-at-work plan. I started having shoulder pains South of Gloucester, so I took the train from Manchester to Beverly with my Surly Karate Monkey custom comfort road bike…with the extra-wide cyclocross handlebars. We’ll just say I wasn’t the most popular guy on the train (and once again, madam, I’m very sorry for the tire stripe over your son’s left eye). This program needs a lot of work; there were bikes everywhere on that train, and the cheerful conductor just shrugged and smiled. The MBTA hasn’t made it possible to do this all that well (there is no “bike coach”), but they’ll let you bring your bike on the Commuter Rail, so you should come up and cycle North of Beverly on 127. You hit depots every few miles, so going home is easy. I don’t know if I’d want to live car-free up here, but it could be done. It would be even easier in Salem. Anyway, you can’t park at Singing Beach (the photo below links to some extreme sandcastle photos).
Hit these open houses on your ride.
