Yearning for A Greek Omelet
Allston residents are still reeling from the loss of the Grecian Yearning Restaurant on Harvard Avenue. A couple of weeks ago, a late afternoon fire gutted the venerable family-owned diner, leaving a gaping hole in the heart of the Allston restaurant scene.
The uninformed might mistake the Yearning for just another Allston dive — out of date, perhaps a bit too retro, and certainly NOT nouveau cuisine. But long-time Allston residents knew better. Where else could you get a decent Greek omelet following a late night on the Allston club scene? One patron in a Boston Globe article described the Yearning’s offerings as “good… soak up the alcohol food.”
In fact, beyond its hearty menu, the restaurant had so much old-fashioned diner charisma that it was recently featured in a scene of the upcoming film, “The Lonely Maiden,” starring Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken and William Macy.
So we’re yearning for the old Yearning. Will the diner ever come back? We hope so. In the meantime, those wanting to maintain proximity to the restaurant (which rumor has it may reopen within a year) can check out these nearby properties:
