"Diversity" is way, way, way overrated.
There's absolutely nothing that shows kids "exposed to diversity" do any better than those raised in more monochromatic/monocultural areas. What matters is parenting and peers, not necessarily in that order.
But, hey, if want to make sure you live in a "diverse" place, fine. Myself, I'd prefer low-crime, nice areas to walk around, local stuff to do, and an easy commute. What my neighbors look like (as long as they're not criminals or throwing trash around) will never make the list.

I once made a trip through Evanston and I began to imagine what my son Arthur would look like swinging in the backyard of a neighboring house. I plan to name my first son Arthur or Benjamin but it will most likely depend on where we end up living. Anyways, the North Shore, which became clear to me in an instant, was completely out of my price range. I've chosen to remain in Wicker Park, where my male Boxer puppy Ricardo can one day run free. I also plan to purchase a Boxer puppy in the future and name him Ricardo but it will depend on where I'm living. One day I dream of living in North Shore.

And you can feel better about moving to the North Shore b/c it didn't get that nice by means of gentrification, like many of the "up and coming" urban neighborhoods that are attracting former suburbanites.

I agree with Shauna. More and more of those far-out suburbanites are moving back into the city, after realizing they can have a similar "suburban" life with closer proximity to Chicago.

I can definitely relate to this posting. I currently work right off the Evanston-Wilmette border and I spent most of my childhood growing up in the neighboring suburbs.
In my opinion, the North Shore area is the most idyllic of neighborhoods to grow up in. It's has all the benefits of any well-to-do suburb but with the unique and convenient influences of Chicago. The North Shore has the best public schools, the most beautiful beaches in the Chicagoland area, and some of the most spectacular homes in the Midwest.
