More Retro than SoHo

Wicker Park has changed, there is little question, but then the nature of urban neighborhoods is change. The hardest aspect of the change these days is the pace at which it occurs. Whereas before a neighborhood might remain ethnically and economically the same for a generation, these days it can occur within a few years. Of course, each new wave of residents moving to Wicker Park has the opportunity to say “I remember Wicker Park when…”

As much as some people decry the devastating loss of Wicker Park’s bohemian culture, there are still plenty of interesting and unique shops and eateries for those who are not interested in spending $300 on a pair of jeans. The hope is that even though there are a lot of newer, more upscale–or even middle brow–shops entering the market, the neighborhood won’t lose the funky places that made it an attractive destination in the first place.

Here are a sampling of hangouts that have stood the test of time:

Earwax Cafe – Yes, it sounds intentionally disturbing but step inside to a world apart. You’ll feel like you are backstage at a laid back carnival. The food and the coffee are excellent.

Reckless Records – Just down the street from Earwax, this place still sells these round vinyl things that apparently play music.

Carniceria Leon – Part deli, part grocery, all taqueria, this place makes a great taco. Try the Al Pastor.

Ed and Jean’s – Leave your trendy bits at home, and…ahem do not order a cocktail, ‘cuz they ain’t got any.’ This is a low-key place to order a beer and talk baseball.

  • Neighborhoods do change faster these days and there are obvious reasons for it. Sometimes change is good, sometimes it's bad (for the residents). The one thing constant is change, for better or for worse.
