Home Shoppers: How To Find Out Neighborhood Information

Some of you who are shopping for a home might be looking in an area that you’re not entirely familiar with. So how do you get a better idea of what your neighbors are like and inside information about an area? Of course, you can drive through the area where you’re home shopping. You could talk to realtors. You could talk to friends, coworkers, and family.

But if you want to know stats on everything from whether you’re right in the median age group of “Joe and Jessica neighbor” or if the stories about it being a safe neighborhood really are true, you can look to one of my favorites – PropertyShark.com

For instance, let’s take a look at this home on 7906 Nardian Way in Westchester. From this chart below (click to enlarge), I can see that the median age is in the 40′s.

PropertyShark also includes a link to the LAPD crime maps. A search for crime in a one mile radius over the last 7 days shows that just one burglary has taken place west of Lincoln.

It’s a pretty useful tool. You can even find out whether you’re in an earthquake zone or flood zone as well. Check it out and happy searching!

you can also get a good flavor of the city from city-data.com…although not all cities are there (couldn’t find westchester for you!).
