Sweetly Dig Into Redfin’s Local Stats

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I spent mine lying on the couch, mewling like a sick kitten, but that’s neither here nor there.

I was a Redfin addict before I was an employee, and sometimes I forget that there’s a lot of stuff on our site that not everybody knows about. Some of these are big things, like the fact that we’re a real live brokerage with real live agents. Others are a bit nittier and grittier, like the sheer number of different ways we try to slice and dice data to share with anyone who wants it.

Example: Our Seattle neighborhoods and zip codes page (or see other cities near Seattle). This page doesn’t get an awful lot of traffic, but it should, because it’s just obscenely useful. It basically shows you the median list price, median price per square footsale-to-list percentage, and number of homes for sale in the entire local area, broken down both by neighborhood name and by zip code.

You can also sort this information by any of the above columns; if you want to see every neighborhood sorted by sale-to-list percentage, just click on that column header and the data will re-sort.

And if you click on any of the neighborhood names or zip codes, we’ll show you another page with information specific to that area, including:

  • New homes for sale
  • Upcoming open houses
  • Price-reduced homes
  • Recently-sold homes
  • Most expensive homes
  • Least expensive homes
  • And most popular (on Redfin) homes

This neighborhood/zip code profile page also gives you trend charts and graphs that you can customize and even import to your own website or blog,  links to related forums posts, comparisons with other nearby areas, and profiles of area schools.

If you haven’t seen these pages, you should check them out. And if you’re already using them, you should drop us a line below to let us know what you think of them. Ideas and suggestions are always welcome! (Cruel, cutting remarks are not particularly welcome, but are taken with a stiff upper lip.)

I agree – the neighborhoods page contains very useful data – I can just never remember how to find it until I accidentally stumble into it. Can you guys make it easier to get to from the search pages or the homepage? Love the site – bought my house from Kathryn Rion and was very impressed. Thanks much.

I'd love to have a way to define my own neighborhood boundaries. Greenlake for example includes the streets right along very busy roads (I-5, 99, 80th) , which I think greatly brings down the average price. Of course, at the extreme you just have Zillow for per-house data, but I think the micro-neighborhoods that don't count the busy road boundaries would be great to see.

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Derek, I'll see if there's anything we can do on our end to make the pages easier to find. In the meantime, the direct link to the Seattle version is this: http://www.redfin.com/neighbor

Let me know if there are any other links you need, and I can dig them up for your bookmarks. But your feedback has been received loud and clear.

Ned, several customers have asked us to figure out a way to let users define their own search boundaries on the map. I agree that it's a great idea. I'll pass your feedback along to our devs. Thanks!

Finding the page is a big challenge.
How would be nice if I could find a similar page for ZIP code, say 98052.
This should be close to the page you showed. But how and where?

  • BryanHowell

    Hi Slyuso,

We've gotten a lot of reader feedback about making these pages easier to find. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, here's a trick you can use: start with the URL “http://www.redfin.com/zipcode/” and after the final slash, just type the zip code you want to see, and hit enter. So, for 98052, the final URL would look like:

This should work for any zip code in an area that Redfin covers. Hope that helps!

What I really wanted was to have information you provided on
      related to zip code 98052.
The referred page has zip codes for Seattle area (?, looks like) only. How do we get East-side info?

      • BryanHowell

        Hi Slyuso,

So, to directly answer your question for the Redmond area (including 98052), click this link:

To check out other cities outside of Seattle, (including Bellevue or other eastside areas), go to this link:

And find the city/zip you want in the right-hand column. Click the link for the city you want and you should be good to go!
