So… Sunday is one of (many of) America’s big TV days, and even people who don’t know who’s playing will gather round the cathode ray tube with beer and salty/cheesy/meat by-product snacks. I’ll probably watch for the ads, though they rarely live up to the hype. And it’s too much to ask for another wardrobe malfunction during half time. Your best bet is to watch in a good sports bar, where the enthusiasm of been-drinking-since-10:00AM-fans will surely infect you. And during the boring parts (that gives you quite a lot of time, in my humble opinion), sneak out to look at some nearby open houses.
The Marina is pretty synonomous with sports bars. Also backwards baseball caps and halter tops (in all weather, no matter how cold). You can enjoy all three this Superbowl Sunday at Jones Road House, along with steaks and a flat screen TV. Escape for a little house hunting nearby (because whatever else you say about the Marina, you have to admit, it’s a gorgeous neighborhood):
1245 Francisco St.: 3/1.5 TIC for $979,000. Open: Sunday 11am-1pm.
3701 Divisadero St., #301: 1/1 condo for $775,000. Open: Sunday, 1-4pm.
Yah, the Mission does sports bars too. One I like is Elixer for its neighborhood/upscale dive feel. They’re throwing a Superbowl MoBQ (check the link; I cannot explain), but all that meat can make you feel a bit weighted down. Walk it off with these nearby open houses:
441 14th St. (Mission Dolores): 3/1 TIC for $648,000. You can also view the other unit in the building, a 3/1.5, this one for $599,000. Both open: Sunday 1-3pm.
270 Valencia St., #304: 2/1 condo for $670,000. Open: Sunday 2-4pm.
No bars in Ashbury Heights proper- only beautiful homes with heartbreaking views. Still, the idyllic neighborhood is a reasonable hike from the Haight and Cole Valley, both of which offer sports bars aplenty, like Kezar on Stanyan and Finnegan’s Wake on Cole.
191 Downey St.: 1/1TIC for $459,000. Open: Sunday 12-3pm.
1126 Ashbury St.: 2/1 condo/flat for $765,000. Open: Saturday 2-4pm; Sunday 1-3pm.
