Pleasanton: Price Reductions, Parkland and Politics

parkland-and-shrubs.gifHousing continues to be a hot topic around the Bay Area these days and it’s not only the housing bubble that’s making headlines. Today’s reports that the Pleasanton City Council has delayed a hearing to consider the issue of the Oak Grove development. Landowners Jennifer and Frederic Lin had hoped to develop over 70 acres of space situated above Kottinger Ranch and Vintage Hills and also agreed to grant  almost 500 acres they own to Pleasanton for parkland. On the face of it, sounds like a cool idea, right? Enter Kay Ayala, a 2004 mayoral candidate and organizer of a group called Save Pleasanton’s Hills (hey, check it out; they have a picture of the most expensive home for sale in Oakland on their homepage!). The group aims to block development of the area and was able to garner the needed number of citizen signatures to put out a referendum for voter consideration. Since the collection of signatures, the Lins have sued and Ayala has filed a motion to block the suit. At this point in time, a permanent ruling on whether the developers can go forth is pending from Judge Frank Roesch, Alameda Superior Court Judge. If the judge rules against the Lins, the City Council will be faced with saying no to the Lins’ development or putting the issue up for citizen vote.

As we in Oakland wait with bated breath for our own City Council to decide on Dellums’ affordable housing proposal, I’m wondering what the fine citizens of Pleasanton think of the Oak Grove situation? Is this news? Or not a big deal? Let me know your thoughts, people. Oh, and by the way: here are some recent price cuts for Pleasanton homes.
