Mystery On East Walnut

$3.6mil house on Walnut St. Pasadena

I’ll let the stats do most of the talking for this recently sold property on the northern edge of Pasadena‘s Playhouse District:

688 E WALNUT ST
Sold for: $3,607,500 (02/01/2008)
BEDS: 3 / BATHS: 1
SQ.FT.: 1,320
YEAR BUILT: 1911

Obviously some curious and unique circumstance is at play here, as the whole block is likely up for redevelopment, but for giggles- this works out to $2733 per square-foot: roughly a 740% increase from what the less fortunate folk around the neighborhood had to accept for their humble abodes. Any thoughts?

  • Most would logically point to it as a lot purchase, but this property does not come with the rather sizable chunk of rear parking-- and the one to the immediate right (in the photo) belongs to a burger joint.

Personally, I think your fountain of youth theory is the most plausible.
  • Maybe the house is made of gold bricks. Or there's a fountain of youth inside. Can't think of any other reason a no-waterfront, no-yard house would go for that much. Did all the cars in the parking lot come with it for free?
