A Look At Mondrian Homes In Playa Vista
If you can afford a million-dollar plus home, the Mondrian by Lee Homes in Playa Vista are now selling. There’s going to be just 16 of these single-family homes. (That’s a bit of a rarity in this neighborhood.) There are six different floor plans, ranging from three bedrooms to four bedrooms.
All of the floor plans will have three-story configurations, so plan on walking up a lot of stairs. But vertical mobility aside, there are some nice features about the Mondrian homes. There are open floorplans, Energy Star appliances, and a host of other energy-efficient perks. Let’s just say you should be saving some dollars on your energy bill. (It’ll cut the dent in your pocketbook just a teensie bit from the purchase price in the long-term.)
If energy efficiency doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty more luxe products that you’ll be paying for. There are slab marble or travertine countertops in the master suites, granite countertops in the kitchen, and eight-foot high entry doors. (The tallest man in the world almost wouldn’t have to stoop.)
Here’s another bit of trivia for you. Piet Mondrian, in case you’re wondering, is the name of a Dutch painter, whose works included the use of primary colors and perpendicular intersecting lines against a white background. So if you want to know where the inspiration of the bright pops of yellow and red amidst some strong vertical lines are coming from, look to Mondrian’s work.

My fiance and I almost bought a home in Playa Vista, but thanks to the fact they postponed us for over a year (methane warnings?), we ended up buying the cutest home in Westchester Bluffs.
I can appreciate all the luxuries Mondrian has to offer, and while we could and would buy a $1M+ home, to us nothing beats the serenity of a true backyard (minus planes flying overhead which has become a fun thing to watch!). Also, forgive me for being picky, but I’m also not crazy about all the methane warnings anymore than paying hundreds of dollars for HOD for “free” internet, access to crowded facilities, living right next to that nightmare/senseless traffic at Lincoln/Jefferson and across from Home Depot. Oh and let’s not forget that pit they called “Phase Two”!!! Last time I peeked past the covered fence, I saw plenty of birds enjoying the swamp created by all the rain. (Not a bad idea)
Obviously, a year into the purchase of our standalone home on a tree-lined street has left us with no regrets and actually thankful to PV for putting us off. I genuinely hope whoever buys into Playa Vista is happy there, because their homes are definitely GORGEOUS. My question and interest in it these days, however, only goes along as how the resales are going and what it’s going to be like once they open that street that crosses onto Lincoln from Playa Vista.
Time will only tell!

Ah. Thanks for your comment, Annie. And you do bring up a valid point about the methane gas in Playa Vista. As far as resale property, Redfin does have a number of properties that sold in the last few months. I counted 9. They range from the low $500,00s to over a million. (But more details of sales there will have to be reserved for a future post.) I personally do know a few parties who bought in PV and yes, they are happy there. I also know of other people who looked there and were put off by things like the methane gas, close proximity of the housing, etc.
Playa Vista, I believe, like all areas, has its merits and pitfalls. And the area caters to a certain type of crowd who is looking for things like high-end finishes, modern designs, and convenient amenities within walking distance.
Some great comments. It’s always nice to see different viewpoints and experiences on the areas we cover.
If anyone else wants to share, please feel free.
