Grayxray - I have to disagree. I think for cities like Anaheim, Newport Beach or even corporate groups (many of which sponsor floats) we would still have a great parade. I just think that Mission Viejo isn't the ideal "candidate" to gain anything from the publicity really...

Gee, if everybody thought that way -- no Rose Parade -- and maybe that would be a good thing.

Ellem & Dominic -Glad to see I'm not the only one. I could understand this if tourism were a huge part of MV or there would be some sort of benefit but I can't seem to find an advantage here yet. I'm trying to though!

Ellem- Good luck with your homebuying and I'm glad you like the blog!

Sheila....

Don't get me started! I agree with you that this does not sound like a good use of public funds. I support more responsible use of taxpayer moneys and although I think that parents with the ability should be helping to close the recent school funding crisis, it seems to me that this 300k would have been better spent on education than on a float. But a reduction of taxes or a set-aside for future necessities would have been the most responsible use of tax monies.

I totally agree -- the "benefits" are most likely going to only a few - the money could be much better spent. How many in the community are going to "come together" and build the float? Most people are too busy working (trying to keep up w/ mortgage payments no doubt) -- unless this could be something in which the local schools participate . . .

had to laugh about the eye-rolling regarding your attendance policy, I also use the monetary angle when informing my students about the importance of attendance -- but I also emphasise that it's their parents' and THEIR OWN tax dollars too (if they work) -- that really gets their attention . . !

I hope to be buying in OC soon and just recently found your blog, and it's GREAT, thanks!
