Upstairs, Downstairs

Going down?

San Diego, and especially East County, has plenty of homes with a view. It’s difficult to avoid seeing mountains, ocean or something interesting. But try to find a basement! Many of us come from places where basements are commonplace. We learned many ways to use a basement and perhaps most important- because we had a basement for our stuff, we could use the garage for our cars!

Two floors plus a basement (unfinished) for storage. Vinyl-lined pool with stamped concrete decking. Spa works, but needs a deck framed around it. New roof, stucco, plumbing, wiring, fixtures, vinyl double-pane windows, paint, neutral carpet and tile flooring throughout.

Big house, big rooms and a basement- how can you go wrong? Tile roof, central AC, two fireplaces, laundry room and more on a 6,375 sq. ft. lot. Is it a real basement? The listing doesn’t make it too clear. Redfin Savings: $13,980*

The best of upstairs (great views) and downstairs (walk-out basement leads to large back yard) on 0.27 acres. OK, probably not the kind of basement where you dump your dirty sports gear out of season, but technically it’s a basement and it’s rare in San Diego.

All this on 1.06 acres- walkout basement, central AC, 3 fireplaces and pretty much what you expect in a million dollar house. Did we mention pool & spa?

Personally I prefer a basement full of dusty old memorabilia: black & white TV set with tubes that take 2 minutes to warm up, wooden skis from 1972, a rusty Schwinn bicycle from when they were made in the USA and B&W photo albums from both our parents.
