Artsy Fartsy
Hillcrest, Ocean Beach and North Park are all artsy fartsy communities. I would describe Hillcrest as urban chic, Ocean Beach as casual quirky and North Park as more earthy. Raw and edgy. I am a closet painter myself and my favorite subject is people so I am drawn to portraits. My favorite artists are Alice Neel and Amedeo Modigliani. I love the way they exagerate and skew human features in a way that makes the physical form even more interesting and curious.
San Diego is home to some very accomplished artists and they live right here among us. One of the best is Nate Erlin (his work is pictured here). You can see him and many others at the Ray Street galleries. Once a month there is something of a neighborhood ritual called Ray at Night. If you haven’t been before you really should go. It’s a gathering of locals who get together for a gallery walk, sip a beverage or two and take in the local fare. It’s so much fun, it’s completely free and you’ll likely run into people you know or a few local celebs.
