Hillcrest’s Blood Runs Red (and White)
I have written before about Hillcrest culture; what a fun loving, high spirited community it is and I’ve eluded to some of the subculture here as well. But I haven’t told you about the winos. They’re everywhere!
California is famous for its wines, of course. In San Diego we are pretty far removed from the wine growing regions of Napa and Sonoma, but we love to consume the fruits of our northern neighbors. Hillcrest’s wineries are neighborhood bars and cozy tasting rooms nestled among fine eateries and funky shops. There are three wine bars on University Avenue; the Wine Encounter, Wine Steals and Bleu. There are two more on Fifth Avenue, the Wine Lover and The Grape. The Wine Vault and Bistro is further West on India and offers special occassion flights with lots of intriguing offerings. The San Diego wine culture is just one more reason Hillcrest is such a wonderful and diverse community. Why not come for a glass and take a tour of this most engaging part of the city.
