Monday Madness – La Mesa Secret Stairs

High Adventure in East County:

When I discovered the Mount Nebo Stair Trails on an obscure page of the La Mesa Web site I knew that a challenge awaited: could I navigate the treacherous trails to the summit without serious incident? I carefully studied the map with its three trails, including the North Face which seemed the greatest challenge.

cautionsteps Monday Madness La Mesa Secret StairsAs it happens, I chose to begin with the North Face, assuming that if I survived, the others might be relatively easier. It was a wise decision, and as I wiped my forehead at the Vista Drive level and pulled a sip from my canteen, I was grateful for the Sherpa shoes and tinted Arctic goggles that protected me from the harsh Winter sun, low in the Southern sky. After catching my breath I determined to walk along Beverly Drive toward the next set of stairs, looking all the while for available real estate.

lookingupstairs Monday Madness La Mesa Secret StairsI observed that lots here are fairly large and off street parking is better than I expected. Few cars were parked on the street at mid-afternoon. I arrived in good health at the East Face and its two stair flights and without excess ceremony I began the climb. I became absorbed in the foliage all around: trees, flowering plants, citrus trees so dense that sunlight doesn’t reach the stairs.

mtmiguelbeyond Monday Madness La Mesa Secret StairsA short break after the first flight and I was tackling the second toward Summit Drive. Something behind distracted me. I glanced back a couple of times and there was nobody there, but something… Well, when I reached Summit I saw what it was. A breathtaking view of the East to Mount San Miguel and beyond! The sight was so stunning I forgot about the stress of the climb.

I followed Summit around toward the final set of stairs. This time I would be descending. As I reached the West side of the mountain I was faced with views of Point Loma, Coronado, downtown San Diego and the glorious ocean. All the while surrounded by fantastic homes where families live with these views every day along with sunrises and sunsets that we can only imagine down in the flatlands.

I needn’t have worried about landslides in this area also known as Windsor Hills. As I carefully worked my way down the final flights of stairs I noticed that there were outcroppings of solid rock all around Mt. Nebo. It seems secure. My adventure took me around several streets as well as up and down the many stairs. In the thin mountain air I found the strength to snap several photos for you. You’ll be happy to know that my reckless charge to ascend untold heights met with no great harm.

I’m sorry to say that there are only one or two prime homes available up the hill and scores that are unavailable. When you see the community, you will understand why nobody leaves this place. It is one reason that La Mesa is the ‘Jewel of the Hills’.

Not at the top of the hill, but a good corner property in a good community. Sign says ’sold’ but I can’t find data on the MLS.

I’m not sure what’s up with 4322 Valle Dr- we listed it as a bargain in September and now it’s boarded up and I can’t tell if the listing is active. It’s a lot of work, but worth restoring:

Great post, Tom. Get your exercise while doing your work. Beats the heck out of reading the newspaper while on the treadmill!

Thanks Susan. It’s possible that I exaggerated the difficulty of the climb slightly.

I have lived in Windsor Hills since 1990. My husband and I were married in our new home. I love these stairs and it makes it quicker to zip down to Starbucks, Jitters or Cosmos for morning coffee and a pastry.
This hill is a big secret. Those of us who live here consider it paradise. The homes are very unique and the people here are always remodeling, seems to be a passion on this hill. Some of the homes are average looking on the outside but inside, they are stunning. The residents are down to earth, many do their own gardening. The “Village” down the hill is a trip back to a time when politeness and and a sense of community were precious values.
I think that house on Valle is sold. It was only a matter of time…yes a difficult remodel but very affordable for this hill. I live on Valle. There nothing like a quiet no outlet street with a view of the world, yet a few minutes walk down the stairs to a charming village where you can get anything you need. The best of both worlds. We see the moon rise from our deck, the snow capped mountains, the cross on Mt Helix, yet Vons is a two minute drive down the hill.
We are a short trolley ride to downtown or a 15 minute car commute. Anyone looking for the perfect Central location, this is it!

Thank you Cher

It’s clear that there is a lot of love for this neighborhood. I love it too.

Thanks for the comments everyone. We just moved here from L.A. and I used to workout at the Santa Monica stairs which was a gorgeous area near the beach. Beautiful homes overlooking the ocan. Since moving to San Diego I was looking for an area to climb stairs in a nice community like this for a little workout as well. I hope I like it. I plan to visit soon. Is it pretty safe? I guess so huh?

My son and I lived on Sheldon Drive on Windsor Hills and he went to middle school and high school nearby where he graduated in 1996. We loved living there – the sunsets were stunning and it was a lovely life. Many climbs up and down the stairs and many bike rides down to the village and back up those winding steep roads. It wasn’t unusual to go for walks in the evening or early morning and run into a coyote.

We rented for 6 years and could never get the owner to sell – too bad – seeing the prices now! It was paradise for a time in our lives. We miss it!

I live off La Mesa Blvd and Acacia. I saw an article in the Union Tribune years ago. Did a walk after the Chargers playoff loss Sunday. I walk behind my house up to Lemon Ave, up to the next street, up a section of stairs up towards Sheldon, up about 6 houses to the section of 100 stairs to your left(before that the other section 0f 100 stairs I think goes down to Beverly.)Then across that street, up the less steep shorter section of stairs, left down about 5-6 houses and then down the 100 stairs with the canopy of growth over it. Then left, then bear right on Date past those 2 million $ homes. Then back down date or finley towards La Mesa Blvd and home. Takes me 1/2 hr. – Richard
