Real Estate, Technology and Home Grown Heroes

Each generation has leaders that impact our lives and change the world.  Whether it’s real estate, technology, travel or local politics, the dynamics of popular culture and social norms are perpetually in motion.  Certain people have vision.  Others have the ability to implement change.  Some inspire through words or actions.  Few have the whole package.  Those that do sometimes rise to the top and leave a lasting impression on how we live, work and adapt to our world.  If you’re reading this blog, I have to assume you are a San Diegan who is technology savvy and your interests fall within an intellectual range.  If you’re like me, you have learned to use modern advances to your advantage and they play an active role in your everyday life.  Here’s to the heroes that have made that happen.

You know Glenn Kelman, right?  The CEO of Redfin.  A little dorky, kinda shy on camera.  A visionary with fire in his belly and roses on his cheeks.  Liberal minded and staunchly devoted to inspiring creativity for a purpose.  Revolutionizing Real Estate through technology, common sense and a certain drive to buck the system.

What about Gary Kelly, Chief Executive of Southwest Airlines?  Not afraid to dress in drag or wear his brightest Hawaiian shorts for a long day at the office.  A proven leader in a very difficult business sector.  Pappa of Ding (gotta love Ding), LUV and great slogans like ‘you are now free to move around the country.’  His crazy antics have gotten him lots of press, but it is his foresight and plain jane business sense that make his airline profitable when so many others bite the dust.

Ah, and how about Doctor Brilliant!  Middle aged hippy type who has lead at the helm of one of modern day’s most powerful tools.  Google has changed our lives forever and for the better.  But Larry’s contributions aren’t only on the technology front, this is a man who believes in philanthropy; not just as a corporate tutelage but as a thoughtful, careful way to make a difference because he can and chooses to at his very core.

Locally, Jerry Sanders is a colorful leader.  Like him or not, he has been a driving force behind many successful public-private ventures designed to stimulate San Diego economically and socially.  He has a little bit of a Santa Claus type jolly about him mixed with that iron dog persona of a former marine.  He’s part grandpa and part pit bull, but his love for this City is genuine and unwavering.
