Bainbridge Island: BYO Brie

When I drove up to this two-unit lemon meringue pie in downtown Winslow, I thought-yawn-okay a sort of typical looking Northwest style structure surrounded by 70′s blah brown condos.

Whatevs.

However, after negotiating a somewhat confusing entryway, I tromped up the stairs and found myself in a pretty darn cool and unpretentious place that feels somewhat late century Euro.

Since I’m the kind of person who would rather listen to Rick Steves interview a Czech woman about pastry choices in Prague’s cafés than listen to the Seahawks smash Tampa Bay to bits, I’m drawn to properties that offer me the possibility of a village-oriented way of life.

I looked beyond the rainbow sherbet wall colors and happily imagined myself toning up the ambiance with creamy hues and sisal rugs. Some condos make me feel like Batman on a bad day, with walls encroaching, but this place has loads of elbow room stacked in three stories, not to mention a deck off the living room and another off the master that offer more space and a sense of a harbor view (not an actual view).

If I lived in the LMP (lemon meringue pie), I’d roam car-free around Winslow, potentially becoming labeled a beloved local character. I’d stroll the half-block to drop my Netflix at the post office on my way to Town and Country Market for a fresh baguette and nicoise fixins, or I’d amble to Blackbird Bakery for an espresso, or wander by The Traveler for a look-see. I’d revel in living moments from a public dock from which to launch my kayak.

I’m thinking, in fact, that if I can’t live in Europe, or even in the LMP, I’m going to forge ahead and act European anyway. I’ll mumble things about pate at the T&C deli clerks in broken French. That just may be the New Year’s resolution I’ve been searching for…
