Recent posts on Sweet Digs Seattle:

Katrina wrote about the Extreme Makeover: Kirkland Edition and yesterday was the big day for the Chapin family. As throngs shouted “move that bus!” the family pulled up on cue to see their new digs. The quiet little Kirkland neighborhood can now go back to life as usual.

While most people probably think the crowd wants the bus to move for the “reveal”, my bet is the real reason is they can’t wait for the crews to leave. After suffering through a week of mayhem with 24 hour construction and traffic disruption, the nearby residents probably wish they’d gone on vacation with the Chapins. From the Seattle PI:

In a neighborhood without sidewalks, metal barriers that had stood for a week — and police — kept the onlookers mostly in check, and traffic along 116th Avenue Northeast was stopped about a block from the Chapin home.

Standing briefly on a ladder directly across the street was Derek Stephens. He and his wife are renting a mother-in-law apartment just down the driveway. His car had been parked where he left it a week ago, because to try to drive it through the mess of workers and equipment would have been, well, he thought, silly.

“My wife has been parking hers down the block, and we’ve been alternating using it,” he said.

The Chapin family cries tears of joy for their brand new 3500 square foot home but as Katrina pointed, those property taxes might bring tears of pain. Their new abode is probably worth over $1 million now based on the homes for sale in the area with similar square footage. Not bad for a home purchased 12 years ago for $132,700.

In the paper it was noted that the owners are responsible for utilities, maintenance, and property taxes. How does a family that could not (understandably) afford to remodel their home or move to a nicer one afford the above on a $1 million+ home?

Exactly. Taxes alone will probably cost about $1000 per month!
