Let’s do some sums.

540 miles
divided by 10 mpg for your Expedition =
54 gallons of gas used for house hunting
times
$4.50 per gallon (let’s go high)
equals
$243 for total gas cost for house hunting over six months.

I think maybe you forgot to divide the total miles by the mileage to get gallons used.
