Get To Know Your Neighbors, Start a Newspaper

xoxo Get To Know Your Neighbors, Start a Newspaper Neighborhoods are a driving force behind many of life’s decisions – where to buy a home, go to school or raise a family. I think that’s why I was so struck when I read the story of a 12-year-old Mercer Island girl who started a community newspaper after moving to the Island from Missouri. Rising journalist Rachel Van Gelder founded The Hoot, a newspaper about life in Mercer Island, so she could meet her neighbors. Gelder went door to door to find subscribers and now has a 20 person following. She even recruited friends to contribute to the newspaper. According to Citizen Rain, Gelder will be taking The Hoot online, so look for a link soon. In the meantime and in the spirit of goodness, do something nice for a neighbor this week. At least try. Or even smile.
