Palo Alto: Swamp Thing

744 PA Palo Alto: Swamp Thing

On the surface, 744 Palo Alto Avenue seems like a real bargain. It has a scenic creekside location and ample curbside appeal. The layout is a bit funky, with a burger-bar window looking into the kitchen and the traffic flow of a double-wide trailer. There’s virtually no back yard. But at $790,000, buyers know enough not to look for perfection.

Step inside, however, and the reason this entry-level property was just dropped by $100k and hasn’t sold in nearly a month becomes abundantly clear.

Imagine the smell of wet gym socks left in a car on a hot summer day. Or a house inhabited by 25 tom cats. Or the secret lair of Swamp Thing.

Another reason why scratch-and-sniff real estate ads have never really taken off.

I think the cat smell dominates, with mildew overtones. But that's a personal opinion.
  • Susan
Is the smell due to the creek (or other outside influence) or to the occupants of the property?
