Oakland: When is a Fixer Upper Really a Tear-Down?

The man emerging from the front yard of this ramshackle house on 61st Street in Oakland certainly had the answer. “It’s a tear-down,” he proclaimed. “And I warn you it’s pretty horrifying in there.”
Of course I took a look. The things I’ll do for Sweet Digs…
Despite its dreadful state – roof caving in, gaping holes in walls, grime everywhere – this house was obviously quite cute at one time.

It’s set back on a good-sized lot and is near to Telegraph Avenue on one end of the street and Racine Street and Bushrod Park on the other.
The billboard outside named a company called F&S of America Inc which I can’t find any trace of.
It’s not for me to say whether you’d want to tenderly renovate it or pull it down and start again. Just that it’s there if you’re interested.
