SF: The Heights, Part 5: Clarendon Heights
Clarendon Heights is an SF treasure, nestled in an expansive forest atop a hill that connects Golden Gate Heights to Cole Valley and the Sunset to Twin Peaks, with a view of downtown and South Beach from the back slope. Houses start at the bottom of this hill and climb up at dizzying angles; those that sit on the cliff’s edge are supported by steel beams so that they seem perched in mid-air, looking over the entire city.

Other features include elementary schools, two reservoirs and the mysterious Sutro Tower which looms over the neighborhood in Art Deco splendor. At the peak of this mountain flourishes an exotic, lush forest–at least 20 acres of eucalyptus, pine, ferns and wildflowers. It’s split down the middle by Clarendon Ave and the housing around it has been divided into smaller neighborhoods such as Crestmont, Clarendon, and Forest Knolls. These neighborhoods offer many condo opportunities since UCSF’s Parnassus Campus Hospital is so close, and many a doctor, nurse, and dentist gets his or her start in the housing market here. You can also find single family homes and the occasional duplex or triplex, making the area diverse but comfortably so: Clarendon Heights boasts low crime, quiet, and incredibly scenic views.
