Berkeley Property With A Difference
A new listing caught my eye today — 1808 Fifth Street is what looks like an interesting live/work property near Fourth Street, Berkeley’s most fashionable shopping district.
What’s on offer? Well, a rather grand looking 3/2 gun-metal gray Victorian home with tall ceilings and some good-looking period details (above), as well as a street-level workspace, currently leased to a non-profit.
It’s MUR-zoned, has “award-winning eco features” and had a planning permit in the past for an additional building. The asking price is $1,699,000.
I imagine creative types living here — throwing lavish salon-type soirees and possibly running a trendy business out of the separate unit. Should they have children (unlikely I feel) they would of course want them to speak fluent French and so would send them to the Ecole Bilingue a few blocks away on Heinz Avenue

that’s one of my favorite houses in the area – although a tad steep in price.

Becky — I agree the price looks high. There is presumably rental income to consider from the separate unit, though. It will be interesting to see how much it sells for. Do you know the neighborhood well?
