I too was uncomfortable writing to the sellers about how we had "fallen in love with their lovely home". We did know the couple a little however, which made it more palatable. Each time, we were outbid by an equal but all-cash offer. It's all about the money. No one really cares about you or your family. It makes me feel a little sick to think of how I pimped my kids to try to get a house. I would never do that again. As a horrendous experience as it was, it will prepare you for the next time. Kind of like having a difficult first birth, it prepares you for subsequent children, should you choose to have any. I don't think that the "begging letter" is always a requirement, at least not on the Peninsula. In hot markets, people used to do them without being asked, to try to sway a seller when a dozen people were vying for the same home.
