it's true that 6th St is unsafe, and I also don't see affordbale housing as the way to make it safe. I don't know if we can make a street like that become a new, model street- the people ruining now will just move to a different street.

Besides the homeless running amuck in that area, my concern is the crime. I tell fellow travelers, feel free to wander around SF safely, but stay the hell off 6th street. There it's not just seeing disorganized people, it's getting the hell beaten out of you, as 30 people tear the shoes off your feet, while they are taking your wallet.

As far as putting low-income housing in an area that already hosts no-income people, will it really help or just help them stay in that area forever?

Garrett, thanks for the good article in the first place!

Hillary: As for places for 6th St. residents to go, why not into the affordable housing the Hugo will likely be made into? I have empathy for the homeless but I have to agree with David: you don't solve a homeless problem by leaving it alone to fester.

How'd they get here then?

Why does SF have to be the repository for the nation's homeless?

Tell me something that hasn't been tried and failed already that we can do about it?

you're not answering. Where will they go? There has to be somewhere for them. If not the Tenderloin then they move back up Van Ness. We're not talking about mobile people with incomes who can take off for another city.

Who cares? The TL?

Why are they owed a spot of sidewalk to use as a toilet? I'm not whining over my inability to afford Manhattan.

Gentrify it all the way.
