Redwood City: Stafford Park Area

dsci0015 Redwood City: Stafford Park Area

Stafford Park, located at the corner of Hopkins and King streets in Redwood City, is smack dab in the heart of the desirable Mount Carmel neighborhood. Consisting of 1.62 acres, this park has renovated within about the last ten years. It features a variety of play equipment for all ages, sand areas, picnic tables, room to toss a ball or frisbee, and has a cool water feature that keeps kids cool in the summertime. This is a park that my children went to (back in the day), where it was staffed in the summer and activities were offered to residents. It really is a wonderful neighborhood, with well-kept homes of all sizes and varieties of architecture, and there are always people jogging, pushing baby carriages, and walking the dog. Right now there are only 4 homes available for sale within 6 blocks of this park:

153 Lowell, 3/2, 1584 sf, $1,050,000 DOM: 4
Update Mt. Carmel charmer with bonus separate studio unit with full bath and kitchenette. This was originally listed last year for $1,250,000.

94 Grand Street, 3/3, 1840 sf, $1,099,000 DOM: 43
Motivated seller, not so motivated agent. After 43 days, there are no pictures of this house on MLS. Described as “gorgeous,” you’d have to check it out in person to know for sure. Price has been lowered 7.4% since it listed in January.

232 Outer Circle, 4/2.5, 2078 sf, $1,320,000 DOM: 17
The exterior of this home does not begin to hint at what is inside: Spacious rooms, updated kitchen and baths, hardwood floors throughout, crown molding, recessed lighting, and lots of other nice touches. Seems a bit overpriced for the area and size, as well as the fact that the last sale was in January of 2007 for $836,000. I’d be hard pressed to believe that someone sunk almost $500,000 in upgrades on this home.

1600 Brewster, 4/2.5, 3500 sf, $1,495,000 DOM: 38
At the corner of Brewster and Fulton, this is a Tudor-style home that I have long admired. Photos of the inside do not disappoint, as the original architectural details appear to be intact. There is even a library and a sunroom, not your typical amenities in suburban homes.

Depending exactly where your home is located in the Mt. Carmel neighborhood, your home school would either be Clifford or John Gill. However, Redwood City operates a magnet school system, where every school has a specialty (science, spanish immersion, performing arts, techonology), so you are not required to go to your home school. You can choose a school that fits your child's interests/abilities, although no transportation is supplied by the district, so you would have to commute to the other schools. All of the schools have visitation days and orientations, so that you can get a feel for what they are like. If you look at a property on Redfin, on the right in a Community & Schools sidebar box. Click on that and then on thr Redwood City School District. They have a whole list of the schools, and you can check test scores, teacher/student ration, type of magnet school it is, etc.

We love the Mt Carmel neighborhood, and also Stafford Park, but wonder what the schools are like for the area. What's the elementary school for this neighborhood? And how is it?

  • I agree Rick. We looked in Mt Carmel 12 years ago before buying our current house at the base of Emerald Hills. Loved the area, the architecture, and the park. While we do have a small park around the corner on Glenwood, it's not the same. And parks are few and far between in the hills. But it is a great neighborhood up here, so maybe when you kids are older....

We live within six blocks of Stafford, and I agree that it is a very nice area. We are considering moving to the hills, but the hardest thing to leave is the short walk to Stafford. If you have kids, this is a great place to be. Mt Carmel has flat streets, sidewalks, lots of kids, and Stafford.
