I know for a fact that many of those penthouse condos are second homes if not third- for whom? Not the majority of San Franciscans! Oh hell no. Mainly LA, Palo Alto, and yeah- Texas.

K, I spent an hour looking for a Beyond Chron article I've read before. It claims stats show the majority of lux condos are owned by those whose zip codes are not in SF. Thus, we may not have a glut of foreign buyers snapping up these pricey pads, but we may have them coming in from other parts of the country. Wish I could provide the link but I just can’t find it.

I know we have plenty of rich people in this city. But they don’t make up the majority, yet the new construction is totally focused on serving them. Thus, who's going to buy all the new places? Not the middle class SF resident, but perhaps some rich dude from Texas?

You can buy a decent size brand new condo much cheaper in Tokyo than in SF. Rents are cheaper too.

Foreign buyers have never really gone for SF--the way they go for NY and Florida. The latter are both non-stops from Europe. On the Pacific side of things, Hawaii and Vancouver actually catch alot of the bid from Asia.

East Bay, baby.

Let the foreigners buy fog. Although I'm still entirely unconvinced that foreigners comprise a significant portion of the buyers in SF. In Manhattan, yes. But again, SF is not Manhattan, never was, and never shall be, world without end, amen.

I know, SW, that you are right- I wish I oould just be happy renting. I feel like if I didn't hate my property manager and her list of convent-ready rules, things would be easier. Also if I didn't have to teach 6 classes a semester plus take on side work only to know at the end of the very long week that I still can't afford a home of my own.

I need to work on my attitude, because in many ways, if I could just enjoy the freedom of renting, and the substantial $ savings, I'm sure I'd be a lot happier.

...okay...I'll try.

Whats the hurry? Take advantage of SF's rent control and hunker down in a nice apartment and watch real estate values drop for the next few years.

these units are really nicely designed. I had the chance to see inside during the recent open house and fell in love with the kitchen.
