Farmers’ Market Fridays

flowers1 Farmers Market FridaysOnly two weeks left in our six-week series on local Farmers’ Markets. This week we head over to Marin County, and next week we end the series in Contra Costa County. Marin Sweet Digs maven Jenny Fung reports that her hands-down favorite is the San Rafael market (#5 on the list), with Thursday being almost as good as Sundays. She also told me that the Corte Madera and Larkspur ones are OK, although both are held in shopping centers, so they don’t seem as authentic, and they are much smaller than the one in San Rafael. And she has shopped the Novato and Farifax markets, both of which are great. The downtown San Rafael (#6) can be a great place to hang out on a warm summer night, but is a bit more arts and craft fair, but still has some decent produce. She says it’s a good excuse to block the downtown streets in the evenings when it’s light out and people watch.

Her ranking of the markets:

  1. San Rafael (civic center)
  2. Fairfax & Novato
  3. Downtown San Rafael
  4. Corte Madera & Larkspur

The full list is below, and please feel free to chime in on your favorites or any that I have missed.

NOTE: Markets are year-round unless noted otherwise.

  • Corte Madera Wednesday Noon – 5pm Town Center
  • Larkspur Saturday 10am – 2pm (May to mid-October) Larkspur Landing

You may want to consider going 90 miles north of Sacramento and visiting the Saturday Chico farmers market …it’s totally authentic and full of the best organic meats, fruits and veggies to be found.
7:00 to 1:00 Saturdays year round.

My daughter shopped the Chico market when she was there for college. I’ve been a few times. It is great, but with so many choices in the Bay Area, it’s not likely many will make the trek. However, if you are in town to preview the college or visitng a student, it is definitely worth it. Stop at Peets and get a cup of coffee and wander through the stalls.
