Recent Sales: Oakland Hills East Side and a Dimond

jewel by scyza Recent Sales: Oakland Hills East Side and a DimondIn late March I wrote about the “other” Oakland Hills: the vast area east of Montclair that has rolling hills and phenomenal views but is oftentimes left out of the limelight compared to the hills closer to Berkeley. This week there have been a number of newly listed sales in these neighborhoods. I’m also including a home in the Dimond District (and that’s Dimond without the “a”); although perhaps not part of the Oakland Hills, this district is one of East Oakland’s gems and does have its share of hills and views. It’s well-hidden and many folks don’t even know about it. Check out this cool blog by a couple of Dimond neighborhood residents: “dimondites” is by Kristine Dang, Alex Kuethe and Brooke Facente.

  • Before moving to Alameda, my family lived in the Glenview section of Oakland. Generally speaking, the Oakland public schools are in poor shape. Most white families living in Oakland do not send their children to the public schools, and the few that do only send them to elementary school (like Glenview Elementary, which is 10% white) and then to private schools thereafter. As a result, the Oakland school system is, for all practical purposes, segregated by race (white and non-white). Of course, this is a trend happening throughout the Bay Area, not just in Oakland.

My wife and her 4 sisters all attended Oakland public schools. My youngest sister-in-law graduated from Oakland High School 2000, and she said that the only white people left in the public school system were from Albania, Croatia and Bosnia. Sure enough, in her high school yearbook is a page for the Serbo-Croatian Club.
  • Hi Philip: thanks for your comment. I agree, Dimond, Glenview and Laurel all rock; very nice homes in convenient and (if on the hilly side of the neighborhoods) often scenic locations. I actually know people in Berkeley who are thinking of buying "up" in one of these neighborhoods (gasp!)And yes, dear Redfin readers, if you have knowledge of local schools in these areas do let us know! Thanks!
  • Dimond, Glenview and Laurel are all nice neighborhoods that offer great value in this real estate market. Dimond Canyon Park is a little known gem in hills. I ride my bike in both Dimond Canyon and Joaquin Miller regularly. Unfortunately the Oakland school district has it's share of problems however Glenview Elementary is generally thought of as a pretty good school. I would like to hear from anyone on the state of the other schools in Dimond or Laurel.

Hi D: Dimond without the "a"; it's in reference to the Dimond District in Oakland which is spelled without the "a". Thanks!
