Yours: $100 To Carpool

63000116 b10317f5f1 m Yours: $100 To Carpool

As we all know, tomorrow is Earth Day, a 30-something-year-old event that has even greater significance now as the threat of global warming looms. If you want to curb your carbon emissions and do your bit for the environment, here’s a chance to not only save money on gas but pocket a crisp $100: 511 Rideshare, the free Bay Area Web and phone service that helps match commuters to carpools, is offering up to $100 in gas gift cards if you switch to carpooling (no fair if you’re already doing it … though, good on you!)

The program starts today, so you can cruise over to www.511.org or call (510) 273-3600 to get started. I’m interested to know: How many readers have changed your behavior – cloth shopping bag, compact fluourescent light bulb, more frequent BART trips – to be environmentally friendly? What tips do you have on going green? And, in case you’re house-shopping, it’s not a bad idea to consider properties near a BART station. To return to the carpool theme, not only can you hop on BART, but often there are casual carpools that spring up near the station, meaning you can ride to San Francisco for free. • Yikes!! Sorry, O sharp-eyed readers! What would I do without you - maybe I should start running my posts by you before I put them up ;-) I'll delete those xtremely old prices immediately.

Oh, and in response to Susan Kuchinskas, you are so right. The first year I lived here I was traveling all the time and used little heat or electricity, so it's virtually impossible for me to lessen my gas usage now that I'm around more often. So, yeah, waah!

  • And what about this perk for carpooling -- but only if you're not already doing it!!??

I'm tired of the gross polluters getting all the rewards for slightly modifying their behavior. What about us poor schlubs who've been doing it all along? Another example is PG&E, which every year gives people a big rebate if they trim their winter energy use year-over-year? We hardly turn the heat on at all as it is, so it's really tough to cut back. Meanwhile, someone who turns down their walk-in freezer a notch gets the rebate.

    waaahhh!

i always thought an impending crash was coming.. but $307,500 for a house in lamorinda???? that would have been some serious deflation!
