Festival Fridays: Memorial Day Around the Bay

cemetary Festival Fridays: Memorial Day Around the BayWhile there are sure to be a number of food, wine, and art festivals around the Bay (as well as San Francisco’s Carnaval), I thought it more appropriate to concentrate on Memorial Day celebrations that actually honor and commemorate the brave soldiers that have given their life in battle.

San Francisco: Presidio Memorial Day Ceremony
On Monday, featured speaker Jackie Speier will present a special tribute to Rep. Tom Lantos. Meet at the Presidio parade grounds at 10:30 for a walk to the National Cemetery.

Alameda: USS Hornet Memorial Day Ceremony
Rear Admiral Craig E. Bone of the 11th Coast Guard District will speak during this ceremony, held on Monday from 1-2 pm. Tours of the USS Hornet available from 10am to 5pm. Location: Pier 3, Alameda Point.

Santa Cruz: Evergreen Cemetery Memorial Day Remembrance
This annual remembrance, hosted by the Museum of Art and History, features community leaders, a keynote speaker, as well as musical and spoken tributes in memoriam of the soldiers who have served our great nation. Location: Evergreen Street near Harvey West Park. 10am, free.

You may also pay respects at Golden Gate National Cemetery in Colma, which contains 161 acres of burial plots, with over 138,000 veterans (and their families) interred here. Take Highway 101 to 380 West (or Hwy 280 to 380 East) and exit at El Camino North. Turn north on El Camino, left on Sneath Lane.

We at Sweet Digs hope you have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.

  • Susan,

I will be going with my church (Calvary Chapel San Mateo) to the Palo Alto Veteran's hospital to serve the veterans a barbecue. We do this every memorial day and veteran's day so if you want to join you're welcome to!
