Mansion Monday: Old World Eclectic

Today, we move out of Santa Clara County into San Mateo County, starting with the southernmost city, Atherton, and a very grand manor. Located between Menlo Atherton High School (on Middlefield) and Highway 101 in the Lindenwood neighborhood, and tucked into 2.25 acres is a masterpiece of a different age. Built in 1908, today’s mansion is a Beau Arts masterpiece, no doubt complete with a grand entrance and wide staircase. Set in three stories, and over 17,000 square feet, the home has six bedrooms and four baths and has undergone modernization over the years. Each room is very well appointed, albeit each having a somewhat distinct character. The living room, with its floor to ceiling windows and thick crown molding fits well into the scheme of the home, as does the library, with its wood-paneled walls and ceiling tiles (athough the lighting is reminiscent of the 1920s in my opinion). But the loft office space shows the eclectic nature of the home, and the Beaux Arts style, with its more rustic wood-paneled walls, ceiling beams, narrow winding staircase, and large skylight.

Beautifully manicured grounds feature a beautiful looooong pool, reminiscent of a scene you would see in a movie. I imagine a Busby Berkeley musical set in water when looking at it. There is ample entertainment space, inside and out, as well as a full basement (not something you see everyday in California). Located at 60 Parkwood Drive, this home has been on the market 98 days, sticking to its original asking price of $23,500,000 ($1,382/sf). This home is truly a masterpiece, an original that has been meticulously cared for and restored, keeping the original style of the home but bringing it into modern times. I have to say that it is times like these where I resent not being able to bring you the listing pictures (due to MLS restrictions). This really is a fine home, something worth gawking at.

Yes, SW you are correct. My little mind was hopping down El Camino and forgot about the southwest territory of PV.

I believe Portola Valley is the southernmost city in San Mateo county, next would be Menlo Park.
