Richmond: Green, Greener, Greenest?

Richmond, the largest but by no means the richest city in Contra Costa, has scored another point for environmental awareness. Omega Pacific Electrical Supply snagged the first Minority Green Firm of the Year award for the U.S. western region by the Minority Business Development Agency Friday.

Omega provides state and municipal agencies with prepaid kits for recycling fluorescent light tubes, ballasts and batteries, and it also sells light bulbs, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Richmond, a city perhaps best known for violence and drug use, is striving to turn its image around, aided by its Green Party mayor, Gayle McLaughlin. Programs such as job training for youth in installing solar roofs and an enclave of green businesses in a former Ford auto factory are helping move the city in the right direction. • Thanks, Maggie! I corrected the misspelling of the word "around," which in my haste I spelled "araound." Have a great weekend, Maggie and all my sharp-eyed readers!
