Readers, You Vote: What’s the New Granite Countertop?

2735419008 1267e63d0b m Readers, You Vote: Whats the New Granite Countertop?Doubtless we are all sick of seeing that cliche on nine out of every ten listings, the granite countertop. Well, while the dang things aren’t going away anytime soon (for one thing, they weigh a TON, so it’s hard to haul ‘em off), they are no longer the coolest amenity around, the Chronicle reports.

So, Redfin readers, what IS the coolest amenity? It’s ”very very sexy,” according to 170 out of the 326 respondents to a Remodeling Magazine poll.

It’s not the backsplash, the Swarovski crystal chandelier or an ever-so-green sustainably harvested bamboo floor. Whoever guesses correctly gets featured in a blog post. C’mon, readers … hit me with your best shot! (Amazing granite photo: vittands on flickr.)

I would say ThinkGlass Countertops. They are stunning! http://www.thinkglass.com/coun...
  • Chris
It's got to be lavastone at the high end and crystallized glass at the low end.
  • Dingdingdingding WE HAVE A WINNER! Excellent, Jackie! Yes indeed, that is the new "sexy." I'll put together a new post congratulating you on your winning comment! Post will go up Monday. Jackie, are you an interior decorator? Real estate agent? Redecorating homeowner?

Regardless, Alexandra V., Debbie and Susan Brady had excellent guesses, so they'll get a mention too. Congratulations, all, for your Sexy Home Smarts.
  • Jackie
OK...so the answer I *wanted* to submit here I mistakenly added to the previous post. I'm pretty sure the new "sexy" would be closets.
  • Wow! They're beautiful! I didn't even know there was such a thing. For other readers: Here's a quartz countertop Web site:

while we're at it, here's an example of a concrete countertop:

And since we're COUNTERTOP CRAZY, here is the greenest countertop company in the world. Vetrazzo collects old traffic lights, Skyy vodka bottles and other recycled glass and makes countertops out of them. True! They are even in Richmond, complementing the Contra Costa County theme. Here they are:

I'm gonna say quartz countertops! I saw a gorgeous white one on David Bromstad's show in February. (yes, the image stayed with me!)
  • Why, Debbie! As a matter of fact, while custom concrete countertops weren't what I had in mind, I'm thinking you deserve the gold star! For sure, ccc's are supplanting granite, which seems like a good idea for many reasons.

If nobody weighs in tonight with the other amenity, you'll be the winner!

Hahahaha Susan, I think I agree with you. After you pointed out the weird white knobs on the cabinet doors, the more I looked at the photo, the worse the kitchen appeared.
  • I love custom concrete countertops, which can have integral sinks, and am also exploring concrete flooring. Hope this is the answer!!!
  • Debbie
Custom concrete countertops; available in custom colors and designs.
  • Susan Brady
Thumbs down. Too stark. It's a "What Not to Do in a Kitchen Remodel," which is how I view everything these days! : )
  • Susan, chief maven of Sweet Digs! If you don't know the answer, I despair of anyone getting it. Now that you mention it, those white knobs are really goofy. How do you feel about the white fridge and microwave?
  • I don't know the answer but those white cabinet knobs and the white appliances look very out of place in that kitchen. Sticking out like a sore thumb....
